Jujube dates, (Ziziphus jujuba), are also known as red dates or Chinese dates. They are widely cultivated throughout South Asia and has been used as a food and herbal medicine for over 3000 years. India alone reportedly cultivates over 90 varieties of jujube. Many cultures celebrate these sweet dates and use them in a variety of traditional herbal formulas. Some believe these dates pack powerful healing properties. Ancient Chinese texts dating back several hundred years BC list jujube fruit as an extremely valuable food and medicine used to increase longevity due to its reputation for nourishing the body, supportiing healthy digestion, and support quality sleep.

Restoration and Strength

As a tonic herb, Jujube is used in formulas to support the overall good function of many organs and body systems. Tonic herbs are defined as those that work to restore and invigorate the body’s organs and systems. Eastern medicine often uses tonics to support weakened body systems. Western herbalism often classifies tonics by their ability to eliminate excess through detoxification. Herbs that fall into traditional tonic categories are valued for their ability to bring harmony to formulas containing multiple herbs with specific actions. They are often included in herbal formulas as a way to support the body’s overall functionality. Tonic herbs like jujube dates can be taken on their own or combined with other tonic herbs. Taken regularly as a preventative health measure, they can ensure all body systems are operating at peak level.

Could Improve Digestion and Overall Nourishment

Jujube dates have a particularly tonifying effect on the digestive and circulatory systems. In Chinese medicine, this herb is often used to balance Spleen Qi (chi). A simple explanation of this would be to say that jujube is known to support healthy digestive function and assist the body in circulating essential nutrients through the blood. This circulation then nourishes the lungs, heart, and liver. It is jujube’s balancing and nourishing actions that create the foundation for its reputation as a tonic remedy to bring calm, steady energy, physical strength, and peace to the mind. This also happens to be the same great foundation for feeling like we can totally handle this mom gig! 🙂
